Reconnecting with my kids
Rebuild trust and closeness with your children — honest, age-appropriate, one kept promise at a time.
Children of parents in recovery do best with safety, routine, honesty at their level and promises that are kept. Small, consistent actions matter more than big gestures, and support such as family therapy or Alateen can help kids too.
1. My children and their ages
First names or initials are fine.
2. What each of them needs from me right now — safety, routine, attention, honesty
3. How I'll talk about my recovery at their level
Younger kids: 'I was sick and I'm getting better.' Teens: more honest detail, and room for their feelings.
4. Feelings they might have — anger, worry, distrust — and how I'll respond without getting defensive
5. Small promises I know I can keep
Promise less and deliver more. Broken promises cost more than none.
6. Routines and time together I'll build
7. Support for them (counselor, family therapy, Alateen, a trusted adult)
8. Anything I need to work out with their other parent or caregiver
