Healthy relationship check

Check a relationship — partner, family or friend — for green flags and red flags, and decide what you need.

Why this helps

Relationships can be one of recovery's biggest supports or biggest risks. Knowing healthy patterns (respect, honesty, safety) from unhealthy ones (control, jealousy, pressure to use) helps you make clear choices — including about dating in early recovery.

If you're afraid of someone or being hurt, the National Domestic Violence Hotline is free and confidential 24/7: 1-800-799-7233, or text START to 88788. In an emergency, call 911. If someone checks your phone, this page may not be private.

1. The relationship I'm thinking about

2. Green flags

Check any that apply

  • I feel safe and respected
  • They support my recovery
  • We can disagree without fear
  • They're honest with me
  • I can see my friends and family freely
  • They respect my 'no'
  • I feel like myself around them

3. Red flags

Check any that apply

  • They pressure me to drink, use, bet or skip meals
  • They check my phone or control my money
  • They put me down or call me names
  • I'm afraid of how they'll react
  • They cut me off from other people
  • Their jealousy feels like control
  • They use my past against me
  • Things have gotten physical

4. How I feel in my body around them

5. How this relationship affects my recovery

6. If I'm thinking about dating: what I want to be true about my recovery first

Many recovery programs suggest waiting a year before starting a new romantic relationship. Talk it over with your sponsor or counselor.

7. What I need to do or say next
