Character defects and assets

An honest, balanced inventory: the patterns that cause harm, and the strengths you can grow in their place.

Why this helps

Steps 6 and 7 ask you to become willing to let go of defects of character. Looking at both sides — patterns that cause harm and the assets that can replace them — keeps the inventory honest without turning it into self-punishment.

Step work is best done with a sponsor or mentor. This is a private place to prepare — share it with them when you're ready.

1. Patterns I see in myself

Check any that apply

  • Selfishness
  • Dishonesty
  • Resentment
  • Fear
  • Self-pity
  • Impatience
  • Pride or arrogance
  • Jealousy
  • Procrastination
  • Controlling
  • People-pleasing
  • Judging others

2. How these show up in my daily life — specific examples

No one else reads this unless you choose to share it. Be honest, not cruel.

3. The one that does the most harm right now

4. My assets — what's right with me

Skills, kindnesses, strengths, things people thank you for…

5. The opposite of my top defect — and how I'll practice it this week

Dishonesty → honesty: tell the truth even about small things.

6. Which of my assets can I lean on more?
