Self-compassion for hard moments
Treat yourself the way you'd treat a good friend — especially when shame and guilt are loud.
Research by Kristin Neff and others links self-compassion with less shame and anxiety — and, contrary to what people fear, with more motivation to fix mistakes (Breines & Chen). Telling guilt ('I did something bad') apart from shame ('I am bad') makes repair possible.
- Mindfulness — name it: 'This is a hard moment.'
- Common humanity — you're not alone: 'Other people feel this too.'
- Kindness — offer yourself what you need: 'May I be kind to myself right now.'
- Use words that sound natural to you.
1. What I'm being hard on myself about
2. What my inner critic is saying
3. What I'd say to a good friend in the same spot
4. Who else has been through something like this? (I'm not the only one.)
5. Is this more guilt or shame?
Pick one
6. If it's guilt: what can I do to make it right?
7. If it's shame: what would someone who loves me want me to know about who I really am?
8. Kind words I'll say to myself, in my own voice
9. One kind thing I'll do for myself today
