My money story

Look at what you learned about money growing up, how addiction or illness touched your finances, and the beliefs you want to update.

Why this helps

Financial therapy research (Klontz and colleagues) shows that unspoken 'money scripts' learned in childhood — 'money is bad', 'more money would fix everything', 'never look at the bills' — drive a lot of money behavior. Seeing your scripts is the first step to changing them.

Don't type account numbers, card numbers, PINs or passwords here — rough amounts and names are all you need.

1. My earliest memories about money

2. What my family taught me about money — out loud and without words

3. Beliefs that sound like me

Check any that apply

  • 'I don't want to look at it.'
  • 'More money would fix my problems.'
  • 'What I have shows who I am.'
  • 'Money is for spending — it'll work out.'
  • 'I have to hold on to every dollar.'
  • 'I'm just bad with money.'
  • 'I don't deserve to have money.'

4. How my addiction, illness or loss affected my money

5. How I feel when I check my balance or open a bill

6. One belief I want to update — and the new version

7. One small money step I'll take this week
