Getting through hard meals

Plan support for before, during and after the meals and snacks that are hardest.

Why this helps

Most eating disorder treatment includes meal support. A plan, a support person and ways to ride out hard feelings make it easier to follow the meal plan you made with your team.

Please leave out numbers — weights, sizes, calories or amounts. If you have a treatment team, bring this to them. The National Alliance for Eating Disorders helpline, staffed by therapists on weekdays, is (866) 662-1235In a crisis, call or text 988. Follow the meal plan you've made with your treatment team — or regular meals and snacks, if you don't have one.

1. The meals or snacks that are hardest, and why

Describe the situation, not the food amounts.

2. Before: what helps me get to the table

3. During: what helps — conversation, music, a support person, a show

4. Thoughts that come up — and what I'll say back

5. After: how I'll handle distress or urges in the next hour

6. Who I can call or sit with

7. What I'll tell myself when I get through it
