Eating disorder relapse-prevention plan
Know your warning signs and high-risk times, and what you and others will do — written while you're steady.
Relapse-prevention planning is a standard part of eating disorder treatment, including the final stage of CBT-E (Fairburn). A written plan with personal warning signs, steps you'll take, steps others can take and what to do after a slip makes it easier to act early.
Please leave out numbers — weights, sizes, calories or amounts. If you have a treatment team, bring this to them. The National Alliance for Eating Disorders helpline, staffed by therapists on weekdays, is (866) 662-1235In a crisis, call or text 988.
1. Warning signs in my thoughts
Describe them generally — no rules, numbers or behaviors in detail.
2. Warning signs in what I do, as others might notice them
3. High-risk times for me
Check any that apply
4. What I'll do when I notice warning signs
5. What I'd like the people around me to do — and not do
6. My care team, and how to reach them
7. What I'll do after a slip — the first 24 hours
Get back to your meal plan (or regular eating, if you don't have one) at the very next meal or snack. A slip is a signal, not a failure.
8. Recovery self-talk I'll keep nearby
