Block the bets: my barriers plan

Put barriers between you and every way you could bet — apps, sites, cards, cash and ads.

Why this helps

Making gambling harder to reach is one of the most useful first steps. Blocks on apps, sites and money buy you time when an urge hits. State self-exclusion lists don't always cover prediction markets or sweepstakes casinos, so block those yourself.

1. Apps and accounts

Check any that apply

  • Deleted betting and casino apps
  • Closed accounts (and asked for permanent closure)
  • Signed up for my state's self-exclusion program
  • Self-excluded directly with each app or site, including prediction markets
  • Installed gambling-blocking software on my phone and computer
  • App downloads need a passcode someone else holds

2. Money barriers

Check any that apply

  • Asked my bank or card company about blocking gambling transactions
  • Removed saved cards from apps and browsers
  • Lowered my daily ATM limit
  • A trusted person can see my accounts
  • My paycheck goes straight to bills and savings
  • Stopped carrying extra cash
  • Froze my credit so no new loans or cards can be opened

3. Triggers

Check any that apply

  • Unsubscribed from promo emails and texts
  • Muted betting ads, podcasts and accounts
  • Left betting group chats
  • Changed how I watch sports (no odds on screen)

4. Barriers I still need to put in place — and by when

5. My weakest spot — the way I'd most likely get around these

6. My plan for that weak spot

7. Who I'll tell, and when we'll check in
