Mornings I feel strong. By 6pm my brain starts negotiating with me. What did your first two weeks look like? Does the 6pm voice get quieter?

It gets quieter, but not on its own — you have to crowd it out. My 6pm rule for the first month: never be where the drink was. I walked the dog at 5:45 every single day, phone in pocket, and called my brother at 6:15. A craving is a wave — it peaks and passes in 15–20 minutes if you don't feed it. Your only job is to outlast the wave, one wave at a time. Day 4 was one of my hardest days. Day 40 was not. Keep going.

What helped me was replacing the ritual, not just removing it. Fancy tea, cold seltzer in a nice glass, whatever — the hand-to-mouth habit is real. Also, if your body feels genuinely wrong (shaking, sweating hard), please call a doctor or a detox line — alcohol withdrawal is the one you don't tough out alone.

Twenty years around recovery rooms and the answer to 'does it get quieter' has always been yes — for the people who kept showing up. Get through tonight. Tell one person you trust what you're doing. Secrets feed the 6pm voice.
