Giving back

Find a way to be of service — in recovery, your community or your family — that fits where you are.

Why this helps

Helping others is good for the helper. In Project MATCH, people recovering from alcohol problems who helped others were significantly less likely to relapse in the following year (Pagano and colleagues). Service builds purpose, connection and self-respect.

1. Ways I could serve

Check any that apply

  • Making coffee or setting up at meetings
  • Being a sponsor or mentor
  • Welcoming newcomers
  • Volunteering in my community
  • Helping out at my recovery home
  • Sharing my story
  • Helping family or neighbors
  • Supporting others in recovery online

2. Skills or experience I could offer

3. How much time I realistically have

4. My first step toward service, and when

5. How I'll make sure helping others doesn't come at the expense of my own recovery
