Quitting nicotine (cigarettes, vapes, pouches)

Make a quit plan for smoking, vaping or nicotine pouches — triggers, support, medicine and a quit date.

Why this helps

Quitting nicotine doesn't threaten sobriety — it can help it. A review of 19 trials found that getting help to quit smoking during addiction treatment was linked with a 25% higher chance of long-term abstinence from alcohol and drugs (Prochaska and colleagues). Nicotine replacement, quit medicines and free coaching each make quitting more likely.

Free quit coaching: 1-800-QUIT-NOW (1-800-784-8669). Ask a doctor or pharmacist which nicotine replacement or medicine is right for you.

1. What I use

Check any that apply

  • Cigarettes
  • Vapes
  • Nicotine pouches
  • Chewing tobacco or snuff
  • Cigars
  • Hookah

2. When I use most (with coffee, driving, after meals, stress, with drinks)

3. My reasons to quit

4. My quit date

Pick a day in the next two weeks.

5. Help I'll use

Check any that apply

  • Nicotine patch
  • Nicotine gum, lozenge or spray
  • A prescription quit medicine (ask a doctor)
  • Quitline coaching (1-800-QUIT-NOW)
  • A quit app or text program
  • A friend quitting with me

6. My plan for my top triggers

After meals: brush my teeth and take a 5-minute walk.

7. What I'll do when a craving hits

Cravings usually pass within a few minutes. Delay, breathe, drink water, keep your hands busy.

8. If I slip, what I'll do

One slip doesn't put you back at the start. Get rid of what's left and recommit.
