People with ADHD and a history of substance use often worry that stimulant medication is off-limits. Is it?

Not necessarily. It's a decision to make with a prescriber who knows your full history. Untreated ADHD can make recovery harder, so treating it may help.

Options a prescriber may discuss:

  • Non-stimulant medications, which have little or no misuse potential
  • Long-acting stimulant formulations, which are harder to misuse than short-acting versions
  • Monitoring, such as regular check-ins, pill counts, or a family member holding the medication
  • Therapy and coaching for ADHD skills, alone or alongside medication

Be fully open with your prescriber about your substance use history, including stimulants. It helps them choose the safest option, not disqualify you.
