Some people worry that taking psychiatric medication means they aren't "really" sober. Is medication okay in recovery?

Taking a prescribed medication as directed isn't a relapse. Many people in recovery take medication for depression, anxiety, or other conditions, and treating those conditions often makes recovery stronger.

Things to know:

  • Most antidepressants aren't habit-forming, and some are also used for anxiety.
  • Benzodiazepines, such as alprazolam and lorazepam, can be habit-forming and are especially risky combined with alcohol or opioids. Many doctors look for other options for people in recovery.
  • Tell every prescriber about your recovery, so they can choose medications with you in mind.
  • Don't stop a medication suddenly without talking to your prescriber. Some need to be tapered.

If someone in your recovery community tells you medication is "cheating," remember that the decision belongs to you and your doctor.
