People considering recovery housing often want to know what daily life and house rules look like.

Rules vary by house, but these are common:

  • No alcohol or drugs, with regular drug and alcohol testing
  • Curfew, often stricter in the first weeks
  • Recovery activities, such as meetings, outpatient treatment, or counseling
  • Work, school, or job searching during the day
  • Chores and shared upkeep
  • House meetings, often weekly
  • Guest and overnight policies
  • Rent paid on time

Ask before moving in: What happens if someone relapses? How are medications handled? Is medication for opioid use disorder allowed? How are disputes handled?

Good houses explain the rules clearly in a written agreement. Well-run houses usually have a humane plan for relapse that focuses on safety and getting back into care.
