Families planning for life after residential treatment often ask what recovery housing costs and who pays.

Costs vary widely, commonly from a few hundred dollars to well over a thousand dollars a month, depending on location, private or shared rooms, and how much staff support is included.

Who pays:

  • Health insurance usually doesn't pay rent for sober living, though it may cover outpatient treatment you attend while living there.
  • Some states and counties offer funded beds or short-term rental assistance for recovery housing. Ask your state's substance use agency or call 211.
  • Residents usually pay rent themselves, often with the expectation of working, going to school, or looking for work.

Be careful with "free" sober living. A house that's free only if you attend a certain treatment program may be involved in patient brokering, which is illegal.
