Is 30 days actually enough, or should we push for 60–90?

Our son's insurance approved 30 days residential. His counselor hinted that longer helps but couldn't promise anything. What was your family's experience?

The honest answer from years of watching families go through this: the number on the residential stay matters less than what's stacked after it. 30 days into nothing tends to fail. 30 days into PHP, then IOP, then sober housing and a counselor he actually likes — that's a continuum, and continuums work. So push for more days if he's not stable, but push HARDER on the discharge plan. Ask the center now, in week one: 'What is the step-down plan, in writing?'

My 28 days felt like it ended right when my head cleared. The IOP after is where I actually learned to live sober. If insurance won't budge on residential, put the energy into the aftercare fight instead.
