Trust comes back through consistent actions over time, not through promises. That can be frustrating, and it's normal.
What helps:
- Do what you say you'll do, in small things as well as big ones.
- Be transparent about where you're going and your recovery activities, without needing to be asked.
- Let your actions speak. Long apologies and promises often land less well than a steady routine.
- Make amends thoughtfully. Many people do this through the steps in AA or NA, often with a sponsor's guidance.
- Try family counseling. A counselor can help everyone talk about the past safely and agree on expectations.
- Be patient with their fear. Family members may need time, and their caution isn't a judgment on your recovery.
Trust usually returns gradually, often over months. Keep the focus on your own recovery, which is what rebuilds it.
