Once a loved one is in residential treatment, families often feel useless and unsure what they're allowed to do. How can they help?

Families can do a lot.

  1. Join the family program. Most residential programs have family sessions, education, or visiting days. Families who take part tend to see better results.
  2. Respect the program's rules about phone calls and visits. Early limits are normal and give your loved one room to focus.
  3. Write letters or short messages of encouragement if that's allowed. Focus on love and hope, not on past problems.
  4. Prepare the home. Remove alcohol and drugs, lock up medications, and think about what routines will help after discharge.
  5. Ask about the discharge plan early: the next level of care, appointments, medication, and housing.
  6. Take care of yourself. This is a good time to get support for you.
