People stopping meth, cocaine, or misused prescription stimulants often want to know what to expect in the first weeks.

Stimulant withdrawal is mostly emotional and mental, and it usually comes in stages.

  • The crash (first few days): exhaustion, long sleep, big appetite, low mood, irritability
  • The next several weeks: low energy, poor concentration, anxiety, trouble feeling pleasure, and cravings that can come in waves
  • After that: most symptoms gradually improve over weeks to months, though cravings can still show up, especially around triggers

Unlike alcohol withdrawal, stimulant withdrawal usually isn't physically dangerous. The biggest risk is depression. Low mood can be severe, and some people have thoughts of suicide.

What helps: a regular sleep and meal schedule, daily movement, staying away from people and places tied to using, support from a counselor or a group such as NA, and treatment that includes contingency management where available.

If you have thoughts of harming yourself, call or text 988 right away.
