There are medications for opioid and alcohol use disorders. Is there anything similar for methamphetamine or cocaine?

Not yet an FDA-approved one. Researchers are actively studying medications for stimulant use disorder, and some combinations have shown promise in trials. A doctor may sometimes prescribe a medication off-label, especially to treat related problems such as depression or sleep.

What works best right now is behavioral treatment:

  • Contingency management, which gives small, real rewards for drug-free test results, has the strongest evidence for stimulants.
  • Cognitive behavioral therapy helps people recognize triggers and build coping skills.
  • Treating co-occurring conditions such as depression, anxiety, ADHD, or trauma matters a lot.

Support groups, including NA, and a structured daily routine help many people too. When you contact a program, ask: "What do you offer specifically for stimulant use?"
