Families and friends often hear they should "carry Narcan" but aren't sure what it does or how to get it. What should people know?

Naloxone reverses an opioid overdose. It can restore breathing within minutes for someone who has overdosed on opioids such as fentanyl, heroin, or prescription painkillers.
Where to get it: naloxone nasal spray is sold without a prescription at most pharmacies and some stores. Many health departments and community programs give it out for free.
What to know:
- It's safe. It won't harm someone who hasn't taken opioids.
- Effects can wear off before the opioids do, so always call 911 and stay with the person.
- A second dose may be needed if they don't respond after 2 to 3 minutes.
- Most states have Good Samaritan laws that offer some legal protection to people who call for help during an overdose.
Keep it where people can find it, like a medicine cabinet, a bag, or a car, and tell others where it is.
