Families sometimes plan a surprise confrontation like the ones on television. If something about it feels wrong, is there a better way?

That unease has some evidence behind it. Surprise, confrontation-style interventions make for dramatic television, but the results are mixed. Some people do enter treatment, but the damage to trust can last longer than the treatment stay.
Approaches with stronger research support:
- CRAFT (Community Reinforcement and Family Training) teaches families to keep warmth and connection, stop funding or shielding the addiction, and keep the door to help clearly open. It has good evidence for helping loved ones enter treatment.
- If you want a facilitated conversation, look for a credentialed professional who prepares the family over several sessions first and respects everyone's dignity. That's very different from an ambush.
The goal is a door they choose to walk through, not a corner they're backed into.
